This Health and Safety Policy sets out how Gardeners Romford manages health, safety and welfare in relation to all gardening and grounds maintenance work. We are committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, subcontractors, clients, visitors and members of the public in the areas where we operate.

Our aim is to prevent accidents, injuries and ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective controls. Health and safety is an integral part of how we plan and deliver our gardening services, from regular lawn care to larger landscaping projects.

Management Responsibilities

Management is responsible for implementing and maintaining this Health and Safety Policy. This includes providing adequate resources, supervision and information to support safe working practices. Managers will ensure that health and safety considerations form part of all planning and decision-making relating to gardening work and service delivery.

We will review this policy regularly to ensure it remains relevant to our operations, including any changes in legislation, industry best practice, equipment, or the nature of the gardening services we provide.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Gardeners and support staff must cooperate with management to enable Gardeners Romford to meet its legal and moral responsibilities.

Employees are required to follow all safety instructions and training provided, use equipment correctly, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, and report any hazards, incidents, near misses or defective equipment immediately to their supervisor or manager.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

We conduct risk assessments for all significant gardening activities, including but not limited to grass cutting, hedge trimming, tree work within our competence, planting, weed control and the use of powered machinery. These assessments identify potential hazards and set out the measures required to control risks to an acceptable level.

Risk assessments are reviewed periodically, and whenever there is a change in working methods, tools, materials, or when we take on new types of outdoor work. Site-specific risks such as uneven ground, access routes, traffic movement, overhead cables and underground services are considered before work begins.

Training and Competence

Gardeners Romford ensures that all workers are competent to carry out their tasks safely. Staff receive appropriate induction, instruction and ongoing training relevant to their roles, including the safe operation of machinery, manual handling techniques, working at height where applicable, chemical handling where relevant and emergency procedures.

Suitable control measures, including appropriate personal protective equipment and safe storage arrangements, will be implemented to minimise the risk of exposure to workers, clients, pets and wildlife.

Personal Protective Equipment

Gardeners Romford provides appropriate personal protective equipment for tasks where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. Employees are required to use the protective equipment provided, keep it in good condition and report any damage or loss so that replacements can be arranged promptly.

Noise, dust and other potential disturbances are controlled as far as is reasonably achievable, particularly in residential streets and communal outdoor spaces.

Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of work-related ill health must be reported without delay. This enables Gardeners Romford to investigate causes, learn lessons and prevent recurrences.

Emergency procedures are in place for incidents such as serious injury, fire, chemical spill or sudden illness on site. Staff are informed of these procedures and know how to obtain first aid assistance and contact emergency services if required.
